About NLC India
NLC India Limited is a Navratna enterprise under the Ministry of Coal, Government of India. It mines lignite and coal, generates electricity from thermal, solar and wind plants, and has begun work in battery energy storage, critical minerals and green hydrogen. It is the country's largest lignite producer, accounting for close to half of national output.
The business has three parts. Mining has a sanctioned capacity of 50.10 million tonnes a year (MTPA), made up of 30.10 MTPA of lignite and 20 MTPA of coal. The lignite operations are at Neyveli and Barsingsar, and the coal mines are at Talabira in Odisha and Pachwara South in Jharkhand. Thermal power stands at 6,620 MW of installed capacity, of which 3,640 MW sits directly with the company and 2,980 MW with its joint venture companies, NLC Tamil Nadu Power Limited and Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power Limited. Renewable power in operation is 1,785 MW, and NLC India Renewables Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary, anchors this business.
The company operates across 10 states and one Union Territory. Its corporate office is at Neyveli in Tamil Nadu and its registered office is at Chennai. The thermal stations at Neyveli and Barsingsar sit beside its own lignite mines, so the fuel is raised close to the plant. It also has a joint venture with Coal India Limited, called Coal Lignite Urja Vikas Private Limited.
NLC India was incorporated in 1956 to develop lignite reserves at Neyveli. Its promoter is the President of India, acting through the Ministry of Coal, Government of India. A promoter is the person or group that set up a company or controls it.
