How it is worked out
Each instalment is paid at the start of its month and earns that month's return, a twelfth of the yearly rate, compounded monthly. This is how fund houses' own SIP calculators work it out.
Future value = instalment × ((1 + i)ⁿ − 1) ÷ i × (1 + i)
where i is the monthly rate and n the number of months.
A fund's return is never steady: the figure shows what a steady rate would give, not what any fund will earn.
