A yield is high when the dividend is large against the price, and that happens two ways: a company that pays out much of its profit year after year, or a price that has fallen while last year's dividend still counts. A one-off special dividend also counts in full for twelve months. The bars beside each company show its dividend per share in each of its last six full years, so a single large year stands out from a steady payer.
The dividends a company paid per share over the last twelve months, as a percentage of today's share price. A ₹10 dividend on a ₹200 share is a 5% yield. It is the return from dividends alone, before any change in the price.
Ranked by market cap, the share price times the shares in issue: the 100 largest companies are large caps, the next 150 mid caps and the rest small caps. This is SEBI's cut, taken here on today's market caps.
Among the smallest companies a high yield is most often a dividend paid before the price fell a long way, and their shares can trade too rarely to buy at the price shown. The floor is a stated rule, the same for every company.
No. The yield looks back at the last twelve months. A special dividend, a year of unusual profit or a fallen price can each lift it for a year. The years of dividends beside each company and its own Dividends page show what it has paid over time.
