About the advance decline ratio

What is the advance-decline ratio?

The number of shares that rose in a session divided by the number that fell. Above 1, more shares rose than fell; below 1, more fell. It counts every share the same, so it shows how widely the market moved, which an index, led by its largest companies, can hide.

What is the advance-decline line?

A running total of each session's rises less its falls. It starts at zero on the first day drawn, so its level means nothing on its own; its direction does. A line falling while the largest companies rise says fewer and fewer shares are taking part.

Which shares are counted?

Every listed company's share that traded in the session on NSE or BSE, once each, by its move from the previous close. Funds and other units traded on the exchange are left out.

What does above the 200-day average mean?

A share's closing price is above the average of its closes over the last 200 sessions, about ten months. The share of companies above it is a common measure of how many shares are in a longer rise; the 50-day average, about ten weeks, measures the same over a shorter time.

When is it updated?

The counts of rises and falls every quarter hour while the market is open and with the closing prices after the session; the history and the averages once a day after the close.
