About Power Grid Corporation of India
Power Grid Corporation of India Limited, known as POWERGRID, develops and operates high-voltage transmission systems that carry bulk electricity across India, using extra high voltage alternating current systems and high voltage direct current links. It is also the executing agency for cross-border interconnections with neighbouring countries.
As at March 2026, the company and its wholly owned subsidiaries had transmission assets of 1,584 lines covering 184,960 circuit kilometres, and 291 substations. The company also runs a telecom business through its wholly owned subsidiary, POWERGRID Teleservices Limited, which operates an optical ground wire network of over 100,000 kilometres along the company's transmission lines. It offers consultancy in power transmission and distribution to more than 150 clients, including state-owned and private utilities, central public sector undertakings and government departments. POWERGRID Energy Services Limited, another wholly owned subsidiary, has taken up pilot projects in solar power generation, smart metering, battery energy storage and green hydrogen.
POWERGRID has a footprint in 25 countries. Its registered office is in New Delhi and its corporate office is in Gurugram, Haryana.
It was incorporated in 1989. It is a Government Company under the Companies Act, majority owned by the Government of India, with the Ministry of Power as its administrative ministry. Its telecom activity was once a division of the company, moved into a wholly owned subsidiary that began commercial operation on 1 October 2023. In March 2026 the company merged 17 of its subsidiaries into two others, leaving 64 wholly owned subsidiaries at the end of that month.
