About Coal India

Coal India Limited mines coal in India and supplies it to the power, steel, cement and other industrial sectors. It is a central public sector enterprise, which means a company owned by the central government, and it holds Maharatna status. Its registered office is in Kolkata.

The company works through seven coal-producing subsidiaries: Eastern Coalfields, Bharat Coking Coal, Central Coalfields, Western Coalfields, South Eastern Coalfields, Northern Coalfields and Mahanadi Coalfields. Central Mine Planning and Design Institute Limited is its mine planning and consultancy arm. Its operations span India's major coal-bearing regions. A foreign subsidiary, Coal India Africana Limitada, is based in Mozambique.

Beyond coal, the company has expanded into renewable energy, power generation, coal gasification, fertilisers and critical minerals. It has commissioned a solar power project at Patan in Gujarat. A joint venture with BHEL is establishing a coal-to-ammonium nitrate plant in Odisha, and a joint venture with GAIL, RCF and FCIL is developing a coal-based ammonia-urea complex. A joint venture with Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited set up CIL Rajasthan Akshay Urja Limited to develop renewable projects. The company also has an interest in the fertiliser joint venture HURL, which has a plant at Gorakhpur.

Coal India was incorporated in 1973. The coal mines nationalised by the government were brought under Coal Mines Authority Ltd., which was re-organised as Coal India Ltd. The Government of India is its largest shareholder, and the public holds the rest.
