About Indian Oil Corporation
Indian Oil Corporation refines crude oil into fuels and petrochemicals, moves them through pipelines and sells them to motorists, households, industry and airlines across India. It has 10 refineries, including the refinery of its group company Chennai Petroleum, with a combined capacity of about 80 million tonnes a year, supported by more than 20,000 km of pipelines.
The business is organised in five groups: refining, pipelines and marketing; petrochemicals; natural gas; exploration and production; and alternative energy and other businesses. Its petrochemicals include polymers, fibre intermediates and performance chemicals. In natural gas, it has a share in a 5 million tonne a year LNG import terminal at Ennore and, with its joint ventures, holds authorisation across 49 geographical areas for city gas distribution. It holds interests in 10 overseas oil and gas blocks, and its newer businesses include renewable power, green hydrogen and biofuels.
In India it sells through more than 42,000 retail outlets and 12,940 LPG distributorships, and it employs around 30,000 people. Abroad, it has subsidiaries, joint ventures and participating interests in South Asia, the Indian Ocean region and the Middle East.
The company was formed on 1 September 1964, when Indian Refineries Limited, incorporated in 1958, merged with Indian Oil Company Limited, incorporated in 1959. Its early refineries were at Guwahati, Barauni and Koyali. In the 2000s it entered petrochemicals, natural gas, exploration and production and overseas operations, and acquired IBP and a stake in Chennai Petroleum. The Government of India holds a majority of the company and conferred Maharatna status on it in 2010, the highest class given to a central public sector enterprise.
