About Indian Railway Finance Corporation
Indian Railway Finance Corporation (IRFC) is the dedicated financing arm of the Indian Railways ecosystem. It raises money from investors and lenders and uses it to finance rolling stock and railway infrastructure.
Its main activity is leasing. Rolling stock and railway infrastructure assets of Indian Railways are leased on long-term arrangements, generally with a tenure of up to 30 years, and the assets are transferred to the Ministry of Railways at a nominal value when the lease ends. The company also lends to railway-related entities and infrastructure projects in sectors such as renewable energy, power generation and transmission, logistics and mining. To fund this, it borrows through taxable bonds, 54EC bonds, term loans, commercial papers and external commercial borrowings, in domestic and international markets.
IRFC operates as a Schedule 'A' Navratna Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Railways, and is recognised by the Reserve Bank of India as an NBFC-NDSI-IFC. An NBFC is a non-banking financial company, which lends money but does not take deposits like a bank. It describes itself as a Government of India enterprise under the administrative control of the Ministry of Railways. Its registered office is in New Delhi.
It was incorporated in 1986. The Department of Public Enterprises granted it Navratna status in March 2025. Its shares have been listed on both NSE and BSE since 29 January 2021.
