About General Insurance Corporation of India
General Insurance Corporation of India, called GIC Re, is a reinsurer. Reinsurance means insuring insurers: a company that sells policies passes part of its risk to a reinsurer. GIC Re provides reinsurance support to 59 direct general and life insurance companies in India, and it receives obligatory cessions on every policy written by domestic general insurers. The segments it targets are property, agriculture and crop, liability, motor and health. It has 501 employees.
It is the only Indian reinsurer registered with the insurance regulator and listed on Indian stock exchanges. Its registered office is in Mumbai. Outside India it runs branch offices in London, Dubai and Malaysia, and it opened an insurance office in the GIFT City international financial services centre in 2017. It has three wholly owned subsidiaries: GIC Re South Africa in Johannesburg, GIC Re, India, Corporate Member in London, which is its corporate member at Lloyd's, and GIC Perestrakhovanie in Moscow. It also holds 35% of Agriculture Insurance Company of India.
GIC Re was formed on 22 November 1972. When general insurance in India was nationalised, 107 general insurance companies were merged and the corporation became the holding company of four insurers: The New India Assurance Company, National Insurance Company, Oriental Insurance Company and United India Insurance Company. It later ceased to be their holding company. It became a public limited company in February 2016, and its shares were listed on BSE and NSE in October 2017.
The Government of India holds a significant share of its equity, and the power to appoint its directors rests with the Government through the Ministry of Finance.
