About NMDC Steel
NMDC Steel Limited runs an integrated steel plant at Nagarnar in Chhattisgarh. It makes hot rolled coils, sheets and plates for customers in infrastructure and construction, automotive, energy, oil and gas, and engineering and fabrication. It is a Government Company under the administrative control of the Ministry of Steel, Government of India, and its shares are listed on the BSE, NSE and Calcutta Stock Exchange.
The plant has coke ovens, a sinter plant, a blast furnace, two 175 tonne converters, a thin slab caster and a hot strip mill with a capacity of 2.9 million tonnes a year. The mill rolls steel up to 1,650 mm in width and from 1 mm to 16 mm in thickness. The product range includes low carbon steel, HSLA and dual phase steel.
The plant stands close to NMDC's Bailadila mines, which supply high-grade iron ore, and is connected to the Visakhapatnam seaport by rail and road. Premium-grade, low-ash coking coal has limited domestic availability, while most other key inputs, including iron ore, limestone, dolomite and manganese ore, are sourced within India.
NMDC Steel Limited was incorporated in 2015 as a wholly owned subsidiary of NMDC Ltd, with a mandate to build the steel plant. The Ministry of Corporate Affairs approved the demerger of NMDC's Nagarnar Iron and Steel Plant into the company by an order dated 6 October 2022, and the demerger came into effect on 13 October 2022. The blast furnace was inaugurated on 15 August 2023, and commercial production of hot rolled coils began on 31 August 2023.
