About Multi Commodity Exchange of India

Multi Commodity Exchange of India Limited (MCX) is a commodity derivatives exchange where producers, traders, institutions and investors trade futures and options on bullion, energy, metals and agricultural commodities. A futures contract is an agreement to buy or sell a commodity at a fixed price on a set future date. MCX operates under the regulatory framework of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). Its registered office is in Andheri (East), Mumbai. It has 583 members and 32,044 authorised participants.

Trading is organised into four product groups. Bullion covers gold and silver futures and options, with gold contracts ranging from 1 kg down to 1 gram, and silver contracts from 30 kg. Energy covers crude oil, natural gas and electricity. Base metals cover copper, aluminium, zinc, lead, nickel and steel. Agriculture covers cotton, mentha oil, cottonseed wash oil, kapas and cardamom. Electricity futures, launched on 10 July 2025, are described as India's first exchange-traded electricity derivative.

MCX was incorporated in 2002. It later became India's first listed exchange, and it became a member of IOSCO, the international body of securities regulators. It launched India's first commodity options contracts. It was the world's fourth-largest commodity derivatives exchange by contracts traded in 2025.

Multi Commodity Exchange Clearing Corporation Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary, handles clearing, settlement and risk management for trades on MCX. A second wholly owned subsidiary, MCX Coal Exchange of India Limited, was incorporated in June 2026.
