About Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders
Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited builds, repairs and refurbishes warships and submarines for the Indian Navy. It also builds vessels for the Indian Coast Guard and for commercial and offshore customers. It is a Government of India undertaking and operates under the Ministry of Defence, with facilities in Mumbai and Nhava.
Its portfolio has eight lines: warships, submarines, Coast Guard vessels, export commercial vessels, green ships, offshore projects, ship repair and refit, and global submarine lifecycle support. It is the only Indian shipyard to have built both destroyers and conventional submarines for the Indian Navy. It has delivered three of the four Nilgiri class stealth frigates under Project 17A, and all six Scorpene class submarines. Other work includes multi-purpose vessels for Navi Merchants A/S of Denmark, a methanol dual fuel platform supply vessel for the Shipping Corporation of India, and three concurrent ONGC offshore contracts.
The Nhava yard is a 37-acre greenfield shipyard for larger ships and offshore platforms. The company's warship capacity has increased from 8 to 10, and its submarine capacity from 6 to 11.
The company traces its origin to a small dry dock on Mumbai's Mazagon waterfront in 1774. It was incorporated in 1934 as a private limited company and was acquired by the Government of India in 1960. It listed on the BSE and NSE in 2020. In the year to March 2026 it acquired a 51% controlling stake in Colombo Dockyard PLC, a Sri Lankan public limited company, which is now its subsidiary. This was its first international acquisition.
