About Chennai Petroleum Corporation

Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited is a public sector enterprise that operates in India's downstream petroleum sector, the part of the oil industry that refines crude oil into products and sells them. It is a group company of Indian Oil Corporation Limited. It was established in 1965 and has its headquarters in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Its registered office is on Anna Salai, Teynampet, Chennai.

The company's core business is refining crude oil into a broad range of petroleum products. These include transportation fuels, petrochemical feedstocks and industrial fuels. Its products serve sectors such as transportation, power generation, manufacturing, agriculture and infrastructure development. Its refinery is at Manali, Chennai, and it supplies feedstocks to downstream industries. The refinery has complex processing plants and is designed to handle different grades of crude oil.

Most of its products are marketed through Indian Oil: 92% of them, with the rest sold through the company's own direct marketing channels. The company also has a 5.8 MGD seawater desalination plant and a 17.6 MW wind farm. MGD means million gallons per day, and MW means megawatts.

In March 2026 the company opened its first retail fuel outlet, under the SOOPER brand. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has authorised it to establish 300 retail outlets across India. In June 2026 the Department of Public Enterprises elevated it to Navratna status, as the 28th central public sector enterprise to receive it.
